Over-the-Counter Options at Sandia Hearing Aids Santa Fe

You’ve probably seen a lot of headlines about Congress and the FDA approving a law that allows hearing aids to be sold over the counter.
In reality, we have had over-the-counter products for some time. Still, we are glad that the FDA has recognized that hearing loss can lead to other health issues — depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, dementia, reduced mobility, falls — and addressed the problem with legislation that increases access to hearing aids and improves education with product labeling.
New Regulations
The rule allows OTC hearing aids to be sold in stores or online to consumers with mild hearing loss. You don’t need a medical exam or a fitting by an audiologist. (Prescriptions are still required for more severe hearing loss or for users under age 18.)
Being able to purchase from multiple providers is a plus. Another advantage to OTC hearing aids is cost.
There Are Downsides
- OTC hearing aids will only work for those who have mild hearing loss. If your hearing loss is measured at 40db or less, you can benefit from OTC hearing aids.
- Most states allow refunds on hearing aids if done in 30-45 days. But, the OTC products are not eligible for those stipulations. That means you may pay less, but if you are not satisfied, you will not be able to return the OTC products.
You Have Options at Sandia Hearing Aids Santa Fe
If an OTC product purchased from us is not working for you, we will take the purchase price you paid for the OTC hearing aids and apply it to prescription-fitted hearing aids.
We currently offer the Jabra Enhance Plus. These rechargeable hearing aids are fairly small with multiple tip sizes for comfort. They cost much less than prescription hearing aids.
The Jabra Enhance Plus has a smartphone app so you can adjust volume. The app also has a “Focus” mode that allows you to only hear the sounds in front of you while not picking up as much of what is behind you.
